I said I’d get the bulk done by now, and I nearly have! There are two more scenes to write, one which has four different options, making it a total of five scenes altogether. It still sounds like a lot, but I can finally see the end - hurray!
This week, I put together all the choices and options for the first arc into yEd, a very simple and useful tool to make graphs and flow diagrams! (see left) It's huge! I can barely see the nodes!
Until this point, I’d been scribbling it all down on sheets of paper and tatty note pads; this feels much better! It also helped me spot a couple of gaps, meaning that it would have been easier to date some characters more than others, and I really want it evenly balanced.
You can see from the flow chart that although there are lots and lots of choices, the story goes in the same direction, more or less. There are consequences to your actions, but these will play out heavily in arc 2. Arc 1 is really about setting the scene and getting to know the characters.
Yesterday, I wrote one of the most exciting scenes in arc 1; it got my heart racing and gave me butterflies in my stomach! I’d share it, but it gives a lot away and I don’t want to spoil it for you all just yet! However, yesterday got me thinking; I’ve had some people say to me up to this point “Hey Lucy, I didn’t know you wrote!” or worse, just pulled a face of disgust when I’ve mentioned I’m writing a story (to be honest, I’ve had this reaction when I say I’m coding my own game too…), but I’ve been writing stories for years! It was a huge part of my animation degree and I’ve always been drawing comics since I was a child. Perhaps this is not seen as traditional writing, but it’s writing none-the-less. I love writing scripts and have always had some story on the go. Sure, my grammar and vocabulary may not be as good as an english graduate, but I have ideas which I want to share with you all (and they’ll hopefully entertain you too!).
I’ve also been trying to come up with a name for my game, though it’s not easy one bit! I’ve written a bunch down but nothing has stuck. Perhaps it’s still too early to think of a title… hmm.
Oh yes! I’m going to GDC 2015 in San Francisco too! I’m very excited about it as I’ve wanted to go for years and never had the chance! If you’re about and want to meet up, just drop me a message and we can grab a drink! ‘til then, I’ll still be writing the end of arc 1! Wish me luck!
