I’m testing my game almost every day now, and omg, it’s actually starting to feel “complete”. I mean, it’s still WAY off – believe me – but some areas are actually finished, minus UI that is.
I’ve done quite a few 3D characters now. Check them out!

These guys feature in the in-game section, and are already in and working with a full range of emotions and expressions. I’ve got another dwarf and elf to make before tackling the werewolves/ lycans! I’ve put them off for a while as they’re totally out of my comfort zone! But what’s even more out of my comfort zone, is monsters and ghouls! Eeep! I’ll be doing a lot of research before concepting those! Yay, a chance to buy more artbooks!
Whilst on the topic of 3D; I’ve been continuing with the low poly backgrounds. I’ve modelled an auction house, cathedral interior, mountain landscapes and a dungeon. It’s something quick and fun to do, so I often chip away at them at the beginning of the week… when motivation and energy levels tend to be low!
Now, for a change, I thought I’d draw my first “CG scene”. This is visual novel speak for: special/ story scene. This one shows during the game’s introduction. (I blame finishing Life is Strange Episode 4 as to why I suddenly decided to paint this; I had the soundtrack on all day and just wanted to draw 2 best friends! I also want to paint some Life is Strange fan art, but that’s another topic…)
This is Zoe (the protagonist) and Lisa (her best friend) walking back from University. They’re both on the same course and play video games together, however Lisa’s been somewhat distant recently and Zoe wants to find out why. She cares for Lisa, but also misses hanging out with her friend and is dependant on her to say the least.
Zoe’s narrative displays to the left of the pair, breaking up the text from the ADV mode. I’ll be dropping these kind of scenes throughout the story, during introductions and key moments. I hope to add a little animation in them too, but time and budget may not allow that.
Actually, I’ve started creating a “nice to have” list, which is full of things I’d love to do if time and budget allows. I think it’s best to work this way so the game can be finished in good time, and improved upon later if possible. I may even attempt to crowd fund the game to give it a last bit of polish, but that’s a thought for much further down the line; once the game is released and IF it does well.
Recently, a lot of people are asking me what I want from this game. Simply, it’s to make a living off it. I hear some visual novel developers laughing to themselves now, but I’m serious. I do believe there is a market for visual novels, they just need to be outstanding. I don’t know if I can make a game like that, but I will damn as well try! And if it really does well, I’d love to hire a programmer, writer and sound technician and make an even better visual novel! One in 3D, where you can explore the world and play little mini games; yeah, that would be fantastic! Nothing like Life is Strange AT ALL.
Hey, I can dream!
